About the Author

Haydu is an award-winning author of young adult novels and poetry collections. Her debut novel, Speak, was a Printz Honor Book and finalist for numerous awards including Booklist Editors’ Choice, School Library Journal Best Book of 2012, CCBC Choice, Whitney Awards Top 10 Great Graphic Novels for Teens and Bank Street College Best Children’s Books of 2012.

The Plot Summary

While I normally don’t like reading books that are filled with high school angst, I decided to give Lawless Spaces a chance. As a teen myself, I understand why other teens find themselves relating so well to what Haydu writes about. That being said, there is no way that any normal adult could relate as much to it as she expects her target audience (teens) would be able to.

The Good Points

This book should be read by all high school students. It gives you a clear picture of what to expect in college, but also helps you get through it. The whole book is written in a way that feels very personal, like Haydu is writing it just for you. She talks about her own experiences, gives examples of how she made it through difficult times and tries to inspire those who want nothing more than to give up on school.

A Book Worth Reading?

Are you into memoirs or would you rather read about historical events? Do you prefer thrillers and suspense or romance and fantasy? If you’re trying to decide whether a book is worth reading, ask yourself these three questions: Is it something I will enjoy? Does it fit my schedule? Does it align with my professional interests? If you can answer yes to these questions, chances are good that it’s worth reading. After all, why spend time on something you don’t want to do—or worse yet, don’t need to do? When in doubt, stick to books related to your career path. You might be surprised at how much you learn about your field of interest just by keeping up with what other people in your industry are reading!
